Inoue Yuichi

1916-1985 Japan    Biography

Inoue Yuichi is a Japanese avant-garde calligrapher who devoted his life to showcasing highly individualised inner desires through the medium of calligraphy. He also advocated being “foolishly adamant,” which involves transcending common norms to discover authentic existence. The way in which Inoue’s works add to the splendor of pieces by contemporary New York abstract expressionist masters Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell illustrates how they introduce Eastern elements to Western abstract painting. As a result, the works of Inoue Yuichi have been collected by important public art institutions both at home and overseas.
